This is a great book which I illustrated for the author, Lyn Dawes. "Talk is the medium through which children learn; and yet children may not realise why their contributions to classroom talk are so important. This book provides teachers with resources for developing children's understanding of speaking and listening, and their skills in using talk for learning."

In a major breakthrough, Culture Secretary Andy Burnham has responded to public pressure and called an inquiry into Wirral Council’s decision to close 11 of its 24 libraries. This is the result of public pressure. As I was born on the Wirral, I am particularly pleased to hear this news from Alan Gibbons. So keep campaigning and come to the conference! I have admired Alan Gummerson's work for years and it was great to see his exhibition at Dean Clough yesterday. It included prints, drawings, paintings, ceramics, bronzes and assemblages (one of which I bought!). The exhibition is at Dean Clough (Viaduct Theatre, Crossley Gallery) Halifax, from Saturday 4th April to Sunday 10th May 2009 from 9:30am until 5:00pm.

My books in India!

I received this lovely picture of children in an Indian orphanage with some of my books. My daughter and her friend have been helping out there where the 64 children are being, fed, clothed, educated, and cared for by Rev. Ratnam and his wife. They depend wholly on fundraising for this great work and donations can easily be made by checking the website: www.missionfortheruralpeople.org

Book Ahead

As part of the Book Ahead initiative I have visited several libraries in North Yorkshire this year. The children in Pickering Library were in good voice and have just finished singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in this picture!

Colne Blues Festival

Jargonisation

I was asked to do some drawings for someone in the business of selling International Education. The lecture to be illustrated was so full of indecipherable jargon that I began by making fun of the words themselves. To my surprise, the client liked it...

Quentin Blake

There is currently a retrospective exhibition of the works of David Wright at Linden Artsmill in Hebden Bridge. His intriguing paintings are about to go on tour, as far as the new National Gallery in Pakistan. Previous exhibitions at Linden Artsmill include works of Paula Rego, David Quirke and Quentin Blake. I was delighted to be asked to open the exhibition by Quentin Blake during the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival two years ago and I also ran an Illustration Workshop that week. The picture is of Quentin Blake, Steve Childs and me, after a talk Quentin gave at the Artsmill during his exhibition and some of David Wright's paintings can be seen in the background.

Twenty Second Giraffe

The Children's Book festival at Rotherham this week had a packed programme and included Melvyn Burgess, Ian Whybrow and Ben Haggarty. Children and parents alike were spellbound by Ben Haggarty's storytelling although the content was sometimes dark and gruesome. At one of my visits to the Rotherham libraries, I was challenged by the children to draw something in 20 seconds... They asked for a giraffe.

Icelandic books

Some of my books from the "This Little Baby" series were published in Icelandic some years ago by Mal Og Menning. On a recent visit to Reykjavik I had a meeting with the publisher, Sig Gunnarsdottir. I was made very welcome and was thrilled to hear that Sig almost knew my books off by heart as she had read them so often to her daughter when she was small... And Iceland was amazing.
